5 major steps for teaching tier 2 words in your lesson: 1. Introduce the word: students pronounce and spell the word: SYLLABLES / PRONUNCIATION/ SPELLING 2. Present a student-friendly explanation Longman English dictionary: http://www.ldoceonline.com/ Online etymology dictionary: http://www.etymonline.com 3. Illustrate the word with examples. 4. Check students’ understanding: Ask students questions about the word/ questions using the word Who/what/when/where/why 5. Extend their understanding (4 Square Model): Have students apply what have learned and show you that they truly understood the word. Students can write or more of the following: examples, non-examples, synonyms, antonyms, picture, and use the word in a context sentence.
