about world read aloud day & mongolia read aloud in ub
"Read Aloud in Mongolia" is a project that aims to promote a love of literacy and an educational community in Mongolia. The project will encourage collaboration among educators by involving local students and educators in reading aloud with native English speakers and local Mongolian university teachers. Myself along with Fulbright English Teaching Assistants, U.S. Embassy in Ulaanbaatar, and local university teachers and students, will visit 10 secondary schools throughout the area of Ulaanbaatar to conduct a literacy lesson with Shel Silverstein’s “The Giving Tree.” Through this “read aloud” lesson, we hope to encourage students to think about the idea of gratitude, generosity, and giving back to the community and the environment around them. All participating schools will receive copies of "The Giving Tree," accompanied by a literacy lesson plan to celebrate and encourage literacy in the classroom.
The initial event of “Mongolia Read Aloud” was our participation in the NGO LitWorld’s “World Read Aloud Day,” which recognizes the power of literacy as a right to all people and is celebrated by over 60 countries and 1 million participants all over the world. This will be the first time Mongolia will partake in this worldwide event. The students had a blast reading, writing, singing, and working together to think about giving back to those around them.
“By raising our voices together on this day, we show the world’s children that we support their future: that they have the right to read, to write, and to share their words to change the world.”~LitWorld
With Mongolia Read Aloud, I hope to foster a love for reading and English, and aim to empower the community of educators and learners in Mongolia.
